The next big title out of the latest YouTube sensations on the big screen, Fathom Entertainment and Glitch Productions’ The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act is opening today in what we’re hearing is $6.8M at 2,221 theaters. That will be enough to win Thursday at this point, ahead of A24’s it-pic, Backrooms.
We gave you a crazy forecast yesterday for Amazing Digital Circus, that being $15M-$18M. Distribution sources misjudged. Turns out what they were seeing was all presales with the outlook now around $9M-$10M over four days. Word is a version leaked online. Again, you never know with these movies how frontloaded they are. Many are figuring that Backrooms will decline -55% to -60% in its second frame with a take of $32M-$37M.
Created by Gooseworx, the adult animated Amazing Digital Circus follows a group of humans trapped inside a circus-themed virtual reality simulation, where they struggle with an erratic AI and personal traumas. The series went viral following its 2022 launch and by the end of 2024, YouTube videos relating to Amazing Digital Circus clocked a reported 25 billion views. The series then became available to stream a year later on Netflix and became one of the five most-viewed Netflix shows worldwide in its first two weeks of October 2024. The Last Act is the long-awaited conclusion to The Amazing Digital Circus series. The pic is playing in Regal 4DX. Men and women are tops in first choice.
Backrooms grossed $5.9M yesterday becoming A24’s highest grossing movie ever at the domestic B.O. and their first to cross the century mark with $103.8M. Focus Features/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster’s Obsession, from YouTube genre creator Curry Barker, wasn’t far behind with $5M and a running cume into its second week of $121.8M (Focus’ highest grossing at the domestic B.O.). Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu charted $1.9M in third place Wednesday for a running cume of $144.1M.
Paramount’s R-rated Scary Movie and Amazon MGM Studios’ PG-13 Masters of the Universe both start previews today at 2PM.
