Starz has greenlit the “Power” sequel “Power: Legacy,” Variety has confirmed.
The series will follow the reunion of Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora) and Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.), the son of Tommy’s late friend James “Ghost” St. Patrick. Starz has picked up eight episodes for the first season.
Both actors previously led their own entries in the “Power” universe — Sikora starred in “Power Book IV: Force” for three seasons, while Rainey starred in “Power Book II: Ghost” for four. The characters went their separate ways at the conclusion of the mothership series, but reunited in the “Force” finale. In “Legacy,” Tommy returns to New York and partners with Tariq.
“Power never dies, and this chapter is our biggest yet,” said executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. “Fans have been waiting to see Tariq and Tommy together, and now they’re taking over New York City. Bringing Joseph and Michael back together is special, they’ve turned these characters into true icons of the ‘Power’ universe.”
“Power” vet Gary Lennon serves as showrunner and executive producer on “Legacy,” which is based on a pilot script Lennon co-wrote with Kendra Chapman Davis. “Power” creator Courtney A. Kemp is also an executive producer via End of Episode along with Jackson via G-Unit FIlm and Television. Mark Canton of Canton Entertainment executive produces, as does Davis, Sikora, and Chris Selak. Rainey is a producer.
“Power: Legacy” is a co‑production between Starz and its former parent company Lionsgate Television. This marks a first for the franchise, as Lionsgate had previously licensed entries in the series to the premium cabler.
“The fans have spoken, and we listened,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming at Starz. “Power doesn’t die, it evolves with its audience, and for over a decade the ‘Power’ Universe has remained at the forefront of culture. We’re thrilled to reunite Joseph and Michael to deliver a new chapter that fuses the franchise’s iconic legacy with bold, boundary-pushing storytelling.”
“I’m thrilled to reunite with Starz to bring this latest chapter of the ‘Power’ Universe to fans and especially proud to be entrusted with continuing Tommy and Tariq’s story as showrunner on ‘Power: Legacy,’” said Lennon. “It’s going to be electrifying to see if these two men can share the city, the game and the intoxicating drug known as Power.”
“Legacy” will be the fifth spinoff of “Power” since the original show ended. Along with “Ghost” and “Force,” there is also the prequel “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” which will debut its fifth and final season on June 12. There is also the upcoming prequel “Power: Origins,” which does not yet have a premiere date.
The “Power” shows have become a cornerstone of Starz’s programming slate. Per Starz, the Season 3 premiere of “Force” drew 9 million multiplatform viewers, while the season experienced 57% in-season growth.
