Why Kim Kardashian ‘regrets’ Met Gala look that sparked outrage

For most people, the lasting memory of Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe‘s dress to the Met Gala was the intense backlash.

It remains one of the most controversial celebrity fashion moments in years, and sparked fierce debate over whether Monroe’s iconic gown should have ever left a museum.

For Kardashian it appears that it isn’t the dress or the criticism that still haunts her.

Four years after stepping onto the Met Gala carpet in Norma Jean’s iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr President” dress, Kardashian has reflected on the 2022 appearance with longtime glam team members Chris Appleton and Mario Dedivanovic.

“If someone’s like, ‘What’s your biggest regret in life?’ you think a lot of other things,” Kardashian joked before revealing the issue was never the dress itself and instead, the styling.

“It was all about the hair. I’ll fight you on that till the day I die,” she said. “I think about it once a week.”

As they looked at photos, Kardashian summed up the styling process, bluntly announcing: “Everyone f***ed up here. Let’s just say that.”

“We had too much going on. You were doing every family member,” she said to Appleton and Dedivanovic.

“We weren’t focused.”

The 2022 Met Gala appearance was controversial as Kardashian was wearing the crystal-covered gown Monroe famously wore while serenading US president John F. Kennedy in 1962.

The historic dress, loaned by Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum, had not been worn publicly in decades and immediately outrage.

The backlash intensified after Kardashian revealed she had lost around seven kilos in just weeks to fit into the garment.

Months later, fresh controversy erupted when claims circulated online suggesting the dress had been damaged following the event, something Ripley’s later denied.

Despite this, Kardashian appears to be more concerned about her hair.

“Everyone was telling me, ‘Don’t do Marilyn hair because you’ll look like a wax figure of her,'” she recalled.

Kardashian arrived with her newly bleached blonde hair swept tightly into a bun, a styling choice she now regrets.

Looking back at later photoshopped photos in which she had a more classic Monroe-inspired look, Kardashian decided, “That would have been iconic.”
