Deshaun Watson has returned to action after an injury kept him out of action last season, and early offseason reports out of Cleveland suggest that he is leading the race for QB1 for the Browns.
But with Watson coming up on the final year of his contract, which is quite pricey to begin with, not everyone is convinced that even if Watson wins the starting job and excels, it puts the Browns in a good position. One of those is ESPN analyst Domonique Foxworth, who talked on Get Up recently about why the franchise is in a tough pickle at quarterback.
“I also just don’t understand from a long-term position what you’re planning,” Foxworth said. “If he plays well, this is the final year of his contract. He has to play so well that you think you’re in a position to extend him again with a big contract, when this team also has three first-round picks in one of the deepest drafts that we’ve seen, at least it’s projected to be as far as quarterback is concerned.”

“I’m not sure this works out, even if he does perform the way you want him to perform. I’m not sure they’re not disappointed, and the structure they built was kind of blown up because Deshaun Watson was injured and didn’t perform the way that they expected, even though they knew the baggage he was bringing in. If they sign up for that again? It doesn’t make sense; it seems like a pretty bad strategy going forward.”
