Percy Jackson and The Olympians star Walker Scobell has a message for people who call themselves his fans.
In a (now expired) post on his Instagram stories, the 17-year-old actor revealed he would be skipping prom and asked fans to stop sending death threats to “every teenage girl who could remotely be associated” with him.
“It’s not fair to them or to their families,” he wrote. “Maybe also stop sending death threats in general. That’s just not cool. Kinda weird I have to say this.”
And, of course, he’s right! It is weird he has to spell out that sending anyone death threats is never okay. It should be obvious, right? But social media has dehumanised the celebrity, and sometimes even their loved ones, in such a way that threatening messages, trolling and negative interactions are unfortunately becoming the norm instead of the exception.
True fans will always know that the artists who bring joy to our lives through film, TV and musc:
- are people first;
- deserve to feel safe, just like the rest of us; and
- deserve privacy on their own terms, not ours.
