Will New York Giants tight end Theo Johnson be thanking Matt Nagy at the end of the 2026 NFL season?
The New York Giants hired Matt Nagy as their next offensive coordinator on Tuesday. The 47-year-old succeeds former Giants interim OC Tim Kelly, who was promoted midway through the 2025 season. Nagy’s arrival in New York has generated significant anticipation about his potential impact on the offense.

Shortly after the hiring, retired Giants running back Tiki Barber predicted that Johnson would be the biggest beneficiary of Nagy’s coaching in the upcoming season.
“I’m telling you. You hear it right now. The person that’s gonna benefit most is Theo Johnson,” Barber said. “As long as he learns how to catch the damn ball. Theo Johnson is going to be heavily utilized in this offense.”
Before joining the Giants, Nagy completed his second stint as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2023 to 2025. During those three seasons, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce recorded 800 or more receiving yards each year.

Nagy also previously coached former All-Pro tight end Jimmy Graham while serving as head coach of the Chicago Bears (Graham played there in 2020 and 2021).
Johnson represents the latest tight end Nagy will work with.
The 24-year-old saw his catch rate decline from 67.4% in 2024 (his rookie season) to 60.8% in 2025. Nagy will be tasked with maximizing Johnson’s production in an offense that also features wide receivers Darius Slayton and Malik Nabers next season.
