‘Shrek’ Spinoff With Eddie Murphy Sets Summer 2028 Release


It’s time for waffles. Universal Pictures has made official, what Shrek star Eddie Murphy began talking about on the press tour for Beverly Hill Cop: Axel Foley: There’s a Donkey movie happening from DreamWorks Animation and it’s coming to theaters on Friday, June 30, 2028.

The movie is an origin stories on how a donkey, became Donkey. Pic is directed by Charlie Bean (The Lego Batman Movie and the live-action Lady and The Tramp), produced by Rebecca Huntley (Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Bad Guys), and co-directed by Matt Flynn, whose story artist credits at DreamWorks include The Wild RobotPuss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Bad Guys 2.

Last summer, Murphy told ScreenRant, “Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys…They’ve written this funny story.”

Universal already had the date on hold under untitled Illumination event film on the Rentrak calendar. The news comes prior to Shrek 5‘s theatrical release, which is next summer, June 30, 2027.

Donkey spinoff movie about the sassy mule is an organic blockbuster: The two Puss in Boots movies combined grossed $1 billion which raises the total Shrek universe across six movies to $4 billion. Shrek won the first ever Animated Feature Oscar back in 2001 and spawned a global live-touring show, an award winning Broadway musical with eight Tony noms and 12 Drama Desk noms, in addition to being a top-tourist destination in London and popular events and attractions across Universal Studios Parks worldwide. Then there’s the whole consumer products of it all.

Currently on June 30, 2028, Warner Bros has a Dynamic Duo animated movie with Paramount also standing on that date for their untitled Call of Duty tentpole.
