EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Bergara (BuzzFeed Unsolved, Ghost Files) and Kevin Kreider (Bling Empire, The Traitors) will star in Jennifer Zhang‘s Cannes-bound feature Trüebadour.
Avatar Entertainment will introduce the feature to international buyers, with early conversations on the sci-fi/horror beginning ahead of the Cannes Film Festival. For Bergara, the pic marks a first lead feature lead role.
Per the plotline, Trüebadour is set inside a cutting-edge game studio, and “follows a team testing a powerful experimental device capable of generating stories from the subconscious of its user – only to trigger a psychological unraveling as those stories begin exposing buried truths and blurring the line between fiction and reality.”
The pic is structured as an interconnected anthology story, where “multiple vivid story worlds tied to a single ensemble” come together.
The film is produced by Christopher Lee Bythewood, Jonathan Hsu and Zhang, who also directs, in association with Asian American media outlet NextShark. Jamie Lee Curtis is among the exec producers alongside Christopher Tremann, Debby Chang, Andrew Sakai, Linda Fang, Jaice DuMars, Michael Walsh, Scott Fitzpatrick, Michael Leibowitz, Stuart Giles, Jessica Sohl, Joseph Niciforo, Frank Mayor, Jon Lee Brody and Benny Luo.
Larry Robinson, President at Avatar Entertainment, said: “Trüebadour taps into a timely conversation around AI and authorship while delivering a high-concept genre experience. It stood out to us for its clarity of vision and its potential to connect with audiences across multiple markets.”
