Pip Edwards says motherhood is ‘the greatest learning curve of her life’ as she fronts first fashion campaign with son Justice | exclusive interview

Exclusive: Pip Edwards describes motherhood as “the greatest learning curve of her life” – and that’s particularly true as she navigates her role shifting while her son forges his own path in the USA.

The 45-year-old Sydney-based fashion designer and creative director, who co-founded activewear brand P.E Nation, is a doting mother-of-one to son Justice Maximus Single, 20, who she co-parents with her ex, Ksubi’s Dan Single.

After finishing high school, Edwards’ son moved to the US for college to pursue his dream of playing professional basketball—a major transition that she fully supports.

“When he first told me, my initial reaction was a mix of pure adrenaline for him and that raw maternal realisation that my role was shifting. It was a huge moment of growth for both of us,” Edwards tells nine.com.au.

“Watching him chase his dreams with such focus and grit is so rewarding – to see him thrive in his own lane, across the world, is just the ultimate ‘proud mum’ moment.”

Edwards said being a mother is everything to her, and the one thing that truly matters most.

“It’s a rewarding, selfless, and humbling experience – it’s the only thing that truly, deeply matters,” Edwards says.

“I’ve definitely evolved as a mum; I’m now in a more supportive role where I get to glowingly observe Justice becoming his own man.”

Despite having two very fashionable and creative parents – two of the biggest names in Australian fashion, in fact – Edwards says she’s “proud” of Justice for finding “his own way”.

“Style and creativity are part of his DNA, but it’s never been pushed on him,” she says.

“He’s very much his own person, which makes me so proud.”

Edwards and Justice are celebrating their first photoshoot together, posing up for the brand Superdry in a Mum Knows Best campaign for Mother’s Day.

“It was incredibly special. We’ve always had a tight bond, but sharing a professional creative space was a whole new level of synergy,” Edwards remarks about being on set together.

“We did a lot of laughing through the takes; it was just a really beautiful, meaningful moment to share.”

“For this campaign with Superdry, it was about showing how style is generational – it’s something we pass down without even realising it,” she adds.

Edwards recently spoke to nine.com.au about going into perimenopause at 39, and becoming an advocate for women’s reproductive health.

Perimenopause happens just before menopause. Often women suffer menopause-like symptoms including hot flashes, hormone levels and fertility levels start declining, and periods become irregular.

Edwards said she’s more “aligned” than ever in this next phase of her career.

“It’s where I’m at now. It’s really aligning with things that are true to how I live life, what really makes most to me, where the impact is, how I can pass on a lot of my experience,” she said.

“That’s what motivates me. Alignment’s so important. It feels good and it feels right and it’s natural and it’s authentic.”
