GREEN BAY, Wis — Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was released from jail Wednesday after his arrest on several domestic violence charges, pending further investigation.
The Brown County (Wisconsin) District Attorney’s office announced that the investigation “remains open and ongoing.”
“After reviewing the available evidence in this case, the Brown County District Attorney’s Office is not yet prepared to make a formal charging decision,” District Attorney David L. Lasee said in a statement. “Our office has requested additional investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that would impact whether criminal charges are appropriate, and what charges would be issued. Mr. Jacobs will be released from custody at this time, and a final charging decision will be made by our office at a later date.”
Jacobs, 28, was booked Tuesday by the Hobart-Lawrence (Wisconsin) Police Department on charges of battery (domestic abuse, criminal damage to property), domestic abuse, disorderly conduct (domestic abuse, strangulation and suffocation), and intimidation of a victim.
According to Brown County Jail records, the strangulation and suffocation charge is a felony, and the other four charges are misdemeanors.
Jacobs, through his attorneys, denied the allegations Tuesday. On Wednesday, his attorneys released an additional statement.
“We are extremely pleased that Josh has been released from custody and that no criminal charges have been filed against him,” attorneys David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Clarence Duchac said in a statement Wednesday. “As we previously stated, we encourage everyone to keep an open mind while the matter is fully reviewed. We remain confident that, once all of the evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will confirm that no charges should be brought against Josh in the future.”
Word of the district attorney’s office’s announcement to delay a decision on whether formal charges would be filed came during Wednesday’s OTA practice, the first one that has been open to the media.
Before practice, coach Matt LaFleur referred to the team’s statement from the previous day, saying the team was aware of the matter.
“I know there’s going to be a lot of questions about Josh,” LaFleur said. “I’m going to stick with the statement that we put out as an organization and just let the process play out.”
An NFL spokesman on Wednesday said the league has “been closely monitoring all developments in the matter.”
When asked if he was prepared to play without Jacobs this season, LaFleur said: “I think a lot’s going to happen between now and then.”
The team canceled media availability with the players that had been planned for after practice.
Chris Brooks and Pierre Strong Jr. handled most of the running back snaps with the starting offense during the practice. MarShawn Lloyd, who has played only one game in his two seasons because of myriad injuries, did not take any team snaps but participated in individual drills.
Jacobs, a first team All-Pro selection in 2022 while with the Las Vegas Raiders and a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is entering his third season with the Packers after signing with the team in free agency in 2024. Last season, he scored 14 total touchdowns (13 rushing) and totaled 1,211 yards in 15 games.
Jacobs and Micah Parsons, who is rehabbing from a torn ACL, were the only players on the roster not present. Thirteen other who were in attendance worked off to the side in a rehab group, including tight end Tucker Kraft, right tackle Zach Tom and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt.
