‘Mortal Kombat’ Star Ludi Lin’s Thriller ‘Unlucky’ Gets Sales Deal

EXCLUSIVE: Berlin-based sales outfit Media Move has boarded The Unlucky, the sci-fi thriller set to star and be produced by Mortal Kombat actor Ludi Lin.

Quentin Lee is aboard to direct and produce. Media Move will introduce the project to international buyers at next month’s Cannes market.

Co-written and directed by Lee, The Unlucky is a Canadian genre feature about an Asian Yale graduate student who falls for a captivating young woman and accepts an invitation to her family’s Thanksgiving gathering—only to find himself ensnared in an alienating con that spirals into unimaginable horror.

Lin and Lee will produce under Lee’s British Columbia-based banner, Margin Films. The screenplay is co-written by Dennis Escobedo (Last Summer of Nathan Lee) and Lee, based on Lee’s original story. The sales deal was brokered by Jennifer Price, executive producer of The Unlucky. Start date has yet to be set.

Lin, who plays Liu Kang in Warner Bros’ Mortal Kombat movie franchise and previously starred in the Power Rangers franchise, recently appeared as a stand-up comic in Lee’s upcoming third season of the docuseries Comedy InvAsian. One Hand Clapping, Lin’s episode, will sneak preview in May at Laemmle’s Royal.

“I’m a huge fan of both the referential films and can’t wait to see their “baby” come to life. And speaking strictly business titles with Asian leads have gained on popularity and went way beyond their core audience so combining that with smart and fun genre is something to get very excited about,” said Justyna Kronkiewicz, sales agent at Media Move.

“I’m thrilled that Media Move, a company with such a sharp eye for elevated genre, is representing The Unlucky,” added Lee.
