MHz Choice Picks Up All Four Seasons Of Das Boot For The U.S.

EXCLUSIVE: Das Boot is going to resurface, with streaming service MHz Choice picking up all four seasons of the classic WWII U-boat series. The first season of the WWII drama has been on Hulu, but Kino Lorber’s MHz Choice will have all four seasons, including ones that have never previously streamed in the U.S.

Season 1 of the drama series drops on July 7 on the streamer. Season 2 will follow on August 4, with two episodes, then installments launching weekly. We do not have the premiere dates for Seasons 3 and 4 yet.

The series came in the wake of Wolfgang Petersen’s acclaimed 1981 movie of the same name. The TV show starts by following the crew of a German U-boat embarking on its maiden voyage in 1942. On land, meanwhile, the action follows a young woman caught between the Gestapo and the French Resistance.

The deal marks the second time MHz Choice has revived a European drama whose U.S. rollout left viewers without access to later seasons. The first was another big German drama hit, Babylon Berlin.

Das Boot was a big-budget European show and assembled a starry cast including Franz Dinda, Tom Wlaschiha, Rick Okon, Rainer Bock and Fleur Geffrier. Vicky Krieps, Vincent Kartheiser and Lizzy Caplan also starred.

MHz Choice acquired Das Boot from NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution in a deal that also sees it land Italian series Dostoyevsky and Piedone – A Cop in Naples, as well as German series Drift – Partners in Crime. All of the shows were original series for Sky, which like NBCUniversal, is owned by Comcast.

“A period drama with modern echoes, Das Boot is a powerful series that’s both timely and timeless, stirring and relevant in today’s world, and we’re thrilled to bring the full series to MHz Choice viewers starting this summer,” said Martha Benyam, Chief Operating Officer, Kino Lorber Media Group. “We’re grateful to NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution and Sky for their partnership to bring all episodes of Das Boot to American audiences and we hope to be the U.S. home to more Sky original series in the future.”

Michael Bonner, President, NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution, added: “Das Boot is a gripping, character-driven series that is an exceptional addition to MHz Choice’s lineup and exemplifies the kind of globally resonant storytelling that connects with audiences around the world.”

The drama was created and written by Tony Saint (Tehran) and Johannes Betz (Zero). It was a co-production between Bavaria Fiction, Sky Deutschland and Sonar Entertainment.
