Jeff Probst accidentally spoils crucial Survivor 50 moment during live finale

Long-time TV host Jeff Probst had the ultimate gaffe during the live finale show for the Survivor 50 special on Wednesday night (Thursday morning AEST).

Unfortunately for the 64-year-old, he accidentally spoiled a crucial moment of the final episode by talking about Rizo Velovic’s elimination before it had been announced.

Probst only twigged he’d spoken out of turn when the 1200-strong audience all collectively gasped at his comment.

“Rizo, you’ve become the final member of our jury. Take a spot over here,” he said, revealing Velovic had lost a challenge before the clip had even played.

As Probst continued talking he suddenly stopped as he realised the reaction he was getting.

“What just happened?” he asked contestants on stage, who then pointed out “the fire hasn’t happened yet”.

The confused host confessed, “I’m not even sure what’s happened” before broadcasters CBS cut to a commercial break.

When the show returned from the commercial break, Probst made a joke about the rush of live television before humorously explaining what had happened to confused viewers.

“In case you’re confused, this is what happened,” he said.

“We were going to show you fire-making, and then have the loser of fire-making, Rizo, come out and talk about if he had practiced fire-making maybe he would’ve won.

“Instead, we did a Survivor twist, it’s the last twist of the season. We call it, ‘A peek into the future.’ So now, we’re going to watch Rizo lose in a fire to Jonathan.”

The next morning Probst spoke about how he “just got ahead of ourselves”, in an appearance on the network’s morning show.

”What’s happening when you’re doing a Survivor finale is two things,” he explained on CBS Mornings.

“You’re running the show – the episode. And then we’re doing these live hits where I come out and I talk to one of the players.”

He said, as a result, “I’m not watching the show” backstage as he preps for interviews and therefore hadn’t quite realised where they were up to.

Gretel, producers, the show's psychologists and even Merlin's dad all tried to convince him to speak, but no dice. Gretel, while clearly ticked off, handled the live-TV debacle pretty well.

“I come out, we’re all set up on the stage,” he recalled.

“We’ve got an empty seat for Rizo. I don’t think anything’s weird.”

Aubry Bracco ultimately won the $2 million ($2.8 million) prize money, after beating out Jonathan Young and Joe Hunter in the final Tribal Council.
