HBO’s Harry Potter to recast Ginny Weasley for season two

The upcoming Harry Potter series has lost a central cast member, with the actress portraying fan-favourite Ginny Weasley announcing her departure from the show.

While Gracie Cochrane, 12, will still appear in Season 1 of the show, the role will be recast for the second instalment due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

“Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one,” a statement from Cochrane and her family read.

“Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience,” the statement continued.

The Cochranes went on to add that “Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”

HBO released its own statement in the wake of her shock departure, saying they “support” Cochrane’s decision to exit the cast.

“We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show,” a HBO spokesperson said.

“We wish Gracie and her family the best.”

Cochrane’s casting was first unveiled in August 2025 alongside the wider Weasley clan; including Tristan Harland as Fred Weasley, Gabriel Harland as George Weasley and Ruari Spooner as Percy Weasley.

Ginny Weasley was only a minor presence in the first book and film, appearing alongside her brothers as they departed for Hogwarts at Kings Cross.

She then goes on to have a far more central role in the second book.

Fans expressed their shock at the announcement on Deadline’s Instagram post, with one saying Cochrane’s Ginny was the “only part of the show [they] were looking forward to.”

Another fretted at what this could mean for the longevity of the upcoming series, saying that “recasting people one season in before it premiers” was “not a good signal for the next like 6 seasons.”

The news of the young actress’ departure comes just two weeks after the show’s second season was confirmed, with production aiming to begin this coming Spring.

The quick turnaround between seasons is consistent with HBO boss Casey Bloys’ previous comments about accounting for the growth of the younger cast members.

Ginny’s recasting is not the only shift for the show ahead of Season 2, with the writing team also seeing a slight but significant shuffle.

Season 1 writer Jon Brown of Succession and The Franchise fame has been elevated to the role of co-showrunner alongside existing showrunner Francesca Gardiner.

Speaking on the decision, Gardiner cited a desire to “maintain momentum” between seasons one and two as their main motivator.

In a statement released at the time, she detailed her “huge admiration” for Brown’s writing, calling him a “brilliant collaborator, and a lovely person.”

“We are lucky to have him.”
