Jerry Seinfeld takes aim at rival sitcom Friends in cheeky on-stage swipe: ‘Good-looking people’

Jerry Seinfeld has taken aim at his one Seinfeld’s greatest TV rivals.

Appearing at the ‘Netflix Is a Joke’ festival on Tuesday, the 72-year-old joked that the iconic sitcom was essentially just his own show, but recast with “good-looking people”.

“Here’s my theory on Friends … My show came on [1989]-90. Friends came on a few years later,” he said, with Friends‘ first episode being run in 1994.

“I think NBC was watching my show and went, ‘Hey, this is working pretty well. Why don’t we try the same thing with good-looking people?’

“And that was a pretty good idea. I think that kind of worked.”

Both sitcoms were a huge hit with fans and centred on a bunch of flatmates and friends as they go about their lives in the bustling New York City.

Friends ran for ten seasons until May 2004 and starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Matt Le Blanc.

Seinfeld meanwhile, aired for nine seasons up until 1998; it starred Jerry, Michael Richards, Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The world was left in shock in October 2023 upon the news of Matthew Perry’s death at the age of 54, caused by the acute effects of ketamine. He played beloved character Chandler Bing in the series.

Meanwhile, Louis-Dreyfus was recently grilled on the question Seinfeld fans have been asking for decades about what her character says to Jerry in the finale.

In the finale, Louis-Dreyfus’ character Elaine appeared to almost confess her love to Jerry Seinfeld, blurting out, “Jerry, I’ve always loved…” before she stops.

When asked about the scene, she joked to nine.com.au: “I can’t possibly tell you that! It’s supposed to be a secret!”

Louis-Dreyfus said despite the rampant debate around the finale, she had no regrets.

“I know it was controversial, which is nice, that’s a good way for us to go out … I know it wasn’t satisfying for some people, it was for others.

“I have no complaints, let’s put it that way.”
