Universal has acquired domestic theatrical rights to Six The Musical Live!, the recorded edition of the popular stage show, and will release the film through Focus in cinemas on August 14.
Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the production reimagines the wives of Henry VIII as pop icons.
The official synopsis reads: Catherine of Aragon (Jarnéia Richard-Noel), Anne Boleyn (Millie O’Connell), Jane Seymour (Natalie Paris), Anna of Cleves (Alexia McIntosh), Katherine Howard (Aimie Atkinson), and Catherine Parr (Maiya Quansah-Breed) reclaim their stories with sass, power, and unforgettable tunes.
The Six stage show launched on Broadway in 2021. The production has since been staged in over 16 countries, including the UK, Japan, China, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Italy, and Switzerland.
The production has won two Tony awards and was Grammy-nominated for Best Musical Theater Album.
Six The Musical Live! was recorded at the Vaudeville Theatre in London. The show was directed for the stage by Lucy Moss and Jamie Armitage and directed for film by Liz Clare. The film is produced by Kenny Wax, Wendy & Andy Barnes, George Stiles, and Dione Orrom.
