England to face Scotland in quarter-finals after win over Australia

England outclassed Australia 47-7 to set up a Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Scotland at Ashton Gate in Bristol next Sunday.

Tournament favourites England finished top of Pool A with three bonus-point wins as they seek to lift the trophy at Twickenham on 27 September.

Australia finished runners-up in the group, edging out the United States on points difference, and will face second seeds Canada in Bristol next Saturday.

Canada overwhelmed Scotland 40-19 in Exeter to ensure they beat Bryan Easson’s side to top spot in Pool B.

Defending champions New Zealand powered past Ireland 40-0 to win Pool C and will face Pool D runners-up South Africa in Exeter on Saturday.

France thrashed South Africa 57-10 to win Pool D and will face Ireland at Sandy Park on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Wales’ miserable World Cup ended with a 28-25 defeat by Fiji as they finished bottom of Pool B.

How does the tournament work?

Teams were awarded four points for a win, two points for a draw and zero points for a loss.

Teams secured a bonus point if they scored four tries or more in a game, and/or if they lost by seven points or less.
