Stars from the UK, and the world, stood alongside Palestinian artists, medics and journalists at Wembley last night, for the ‘Together for Palestine’ concert.
Organised by British musician Brian Eno with Gazan painter Malak Mattar and UK charity Choose Love, the event has raised close to £1.5 million (and counting) for organisations providing humanitarian support and medical care for injured children, amputees, orphans and families most in need in Gaza. According to a release, the organisations benefiting from the event include the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, Palestinian Medical Relief Society and Taawon.
The event highlighted the tireless work of doctors and nurses, honoured the 270 journalists killed in Gaza – as well as those who are still risking their lives in the region – and featured musical performances, speeches and poetry readings by both Palestinian and global artists including Saint Levant, Elyanna, Annie Lennox (via video), Benedict Cumberbatch, Jameela Jamil, Richard Gere, Nicola Coughlan, Florence Pugh, Paloma Faith, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Zainab Jiwa and more.
A number of stars who couldn’t be there also shared their support via video, including Cillian Murphy, Billie Eilish, Finneas, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who has consistently used her platform to advocate for Palestinian human rights and an urgent ceasefire, also took to the stage. She said, “There are many artists that I love, and that I know you love, that have hundreds of millions of followers and they’re saying nothing in this moment.”
Fellow actor Florence Pugh also shared powerful words on stage: “Silence in the face of such suffering is not neutrality. It is complicity.”
