Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha just dropped the news every teen of the 00s wants to hear – there’s a sequel in the works!
Ok, sort of. It’s in its very, very early stages. But still, yay!
Speaking to the BBC, Gurinder said, “a lot has changed since the original movie, but I think that people still don’t think that women should play football.” So of course, she’s hoping to tackle that with a new film or a TV series – she hasn’t made up her mind yet.

What we do know is that there is a script in formation. Gurinder is hoping original stars Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, who starred as besties Jess and Jules in the first film, will be on board again, as well as members of the current England squad. According to Deadline, Gurinder has been chatting to the U.S. women’s team too.
“Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it,” Gurinder told the publication. “I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.”
So when might this sequel be happening? Per the BBC, Gurinder is looking at a 2027 release.
The original film came out in 2002 and also starred Jonathan Rhys Myers, Anupam Kher, Juliet Stevenson, and Ameet Chana. It was written by Gurinder and her husband, Paul Mayeda Berges, and Guljit Bindra.
