Actress Sydney Sweeney has hit back at critics after her latest film Christy flopped, following many controversies on her part.
The Euphoria star, 28, took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the film’s performance with her fans.
“i am so deeply proud of this movie. proud of the film david made. proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin,” she wrote.
“this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life. this film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence.
“we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives.thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come.
“if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.
“so yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you.”

Christy follows the story of American female boxer Christy Salters (formerly Christy Martin), who was credited with legitimising women’s participation in the sport and is recognised as the most successful and prominent female boxer in the US.
Salters went through an abusive marriage and was even almost murdered by her ex-husband and former coach James Martin before coming out as a lesbian and going on to marry her former rival, Lisa Holewyne.

Sweeney’s participation in the film raised eyebrows, considering her conservative political views in being a registered Republican voter, showing her support for Republican President Donald Trump.
She has also been swept up in a number of recent scandals, including dating Scooter Braun – who is known for withholding Taylor Swift’s master tracks – aligning herself with billionaire Jeff Bezos, and her American Eagle jeans advertisement that seems to support eugenics.

Christy was released in 2011 theatres in the US, grossing only $US 1.3 million (approx. $1.9 million), making the per-theater average $US 649 (approx. $993).
According to Box Office Mojo, this places the film ninth among the top 10 worst openings for a new release on over 2,000 screens.
Fans shared their thoughts in the comments.
“Raise awareness for domestic but support the likes of trump? need to make your mind up on that one,” said one commenter.
“Christy deserves better, you ruined her story,” another added.
“The movie was brilliant, and Christy’s story deserved to be told just like that. But it’s hard for people to focus on the story when off-screen choices send a totally different message,” explained one fan.
“Dating someone known for exploiting women, and voting against women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, undermines a film about a lesbian DV survivor, no matter how great it is.”
