Matthew Lillard reveals big Scream regret

Matthew Lillard wants to go “back in time” to take a Ghostface mask from the set of Scream.

Matthew Lillard played Stu Macher – a Ghostface killer – in Scream

The 56-year-old actor played one of the original killers – Stu Macher – in the 1996 film that kicked off the hit slasher franchise.

Matthew told People: “I wish I had one of the original masks. If I could go back in time, I’d steal the s*** out of that thing.”

The star – who was cast as one of the Ghostface killers in Scream 1, alongside Skeet Ulrich (Billy Loomis) – then admitted he did not take any original props because Matthew was adamant about not taking things that are not his.

He added: “No, nothing. I wasn’t really the era of collectables like it is now. I feel like people always want to know what you’ve taken and you’re not supposed to take, and I’m a pretty adamant rule follower, so I didn’t take anything.”

However, when it came to playing Shaggy in the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo movie, Matthew received a framed picture of the Luna Ghost, as well as a mini replica of the skull from Spooky Island, as “gifts from the production”.

Meanwhile, Matthew has returned to the Scream franchise for the seventh movie, in which he has a cameo role – despite his alter ego, Stu, being killed off when Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) dropped a TV on his head in the original motion picture.

And he spent 20 years “petitioning and campaigning” for a comeback to the slasher series.

In February, Matthew told Nerdist: “It was amazing! I’ve been waiting. I’d sort of been petitioning and campaigning for that call for 20 years.

“At some point, I was originally supposed to be the killer in Scream 3, so I was like, ‘Well, come on. He’s alive. I mean, we’ve validated the fact that he’s alive. He’s going to be in three, so he can still be alive.’

“So that was super fun … I think the fans are going to love the movie. I think it really hearkens back to what the original was.

“And for me, getting a chance to come back and play in this world after all these years is really lovely, and I’m excited.”
