Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has spent some time in a hospital and aid packaging facility in Jordan meeting with humanitarian workers supporting relief efforts in Gaza.
Speaking about his trip on socials, Lewis said:
“When you see what’s happening on the ground, it can be so easy to feel hopeless and like there’s nothing we can do to help those that are suffering. I thought that feeling of hopelessness would’ve been what I took away from my visit, but it wasn’t… What resonated the most was the spirit of resilience and humanity. The spirit of the families fighting for their survival. The spirit of doctors working tirelessly to save them. The spirit of the teams from the British Red Cross, Jordan Red Crescent and the Palestine Red Crescent Societies doing everything they can to deliver aid.”
His visit comes just weeks after Israel announced it would be suspending the operations of dozens of international humanitarian groups in Gaza including Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who did not provide personal details of each staff member. The aid groups have cited serious safety concerns for their workers, and the UN’s human rights chief, Volker Türk, said this was the latest in a pattern of Israel’s “unlawful restrictions on humanitarian access.”
Lewis is now using his platform to call for unrestricted access of aid into Gaza: “Help is possible, ending this suffering is possible, but the trickle of aid currently reaching Gaza is nowhere near enough. Humanitarian organisations must be allowed to reach the places where help is needed…”
