In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Alicia Keys’ ‘Unplugged’, MTV have announced plans to broadcast the legendary concert across its U.S. and international channels through October 12th 2025.
Recorded live on July 4th 2005, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the performance marked Keys’ first-ever live recording and remains one of the most memorable moments in MTV’s Unplugged history. Upon its release, it became the first MTV Unplugged album by a female artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and achieved the highest debut for an ‘Unplugged’ performance since Nirvana’s 1994 session. The acclaimed album went on to earn a GRAMMY nomination for Best R&B Album.
To mark the upcoming anniversary of the album, Keys treated fans to a special Encore Series performance at Broadway’s Shubert Theater, home of her Tony Award-winning musical Hell’s Kitchen. The set included fan favourites, notably ‘Unbreakable’ from her chart-topping ’MTV Unplugged’ album.
To further commemorate the milestone, AK Worldwide and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, have also released ‘Unplugged 20th Anniversary’ — a deluxe 2-LP black vinyl edition of Alicia Keys’ landmark MTV Unplugged performance. Out now, this special edition commemorates two decades since the intimate concert recorded live on July 4, 2005, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
In a throwback homage, Keys took to Jungle City Studios in New York City to reimagine three fan favourites from the concert in intimate ’Unplugged20 Sessions’ performances. The performances can be viewed on YouTube now.
