The former couple were married in April 2003 and separated in 2012 before divorcing years later, but still maintain a great relationship as they co-parent their sons Charles, 22, and Tennyson, 19.

They have both moved on with their respective new partners.

“It was really lovely, actually. It was a lovely bunch of people performing on the bill. I thought it was lovely of him to think of it,” Spencer says.

“I thought it was a really sweet thing to do, and it was lovely for our boys to have mum and dad both doing their thing up on stage.”

“It felt like such a special moment; I haven’t performed with Russell in a long time. The night was incredible, the audience was so supportive, and there was a wonderful energy among everyone backstage.”

“It was a nice, kind of full circle moment with Russell, I think.”

Spencer recently posted a fun and hilarious tongue-in-cheek video with fans about doing vocal exercises while on the treadmill, joking: “Are you finding your kids annoying? Vocal exercises. They’ll be out of your hair before you know it.”

When asked about the relatable clip by nine.com.au, Spencer jokes she does it “every day”.

“I was on there doing my exercise and it just occurred to me, I thought, ‘I must drive my kids, my partner, insane with this’. I’m sure they’re used to it,” she says with a chuckle.

So did she have any nerves about performing and getting back on stage again?

“It’s always nerve-wracking and particularly being out of it for a while. But I’m enjoying it more than ever,” she says.

“I’m probably enjoying this more than my last two albums. I think that’s because I feel freer; I’m not putting pressure or expectations on this record. Whereas previous record companies that are kind of driving you and expecting something out of it… I’m not.

“I’m doing it because I’m kind of propelled to do it. And for the love of it, and because I felt like I had things to say at this stage.”

She also says she’s more expressive on stage now and moving more.

“I’ve got out from behind my keyboard, and I’m performing more and I’ve got a couple of dancers on stage, and I’m really loving not sitting and playing while I’m singing. It’s really freeing. I’ve always loved movement.”

Her new album includes tracks like Hummingbird and Older (Regenerate Part II), and the accompanying music videos are visually stunning and impactful.

“I kind of went into it this time, thinking, if I’m gonna make some videos, then I’d like to make them quite theatrical and imaginative and a bit fairytale, which is always my thing from childhood. I love that kind of English dark fairytale thing,” she explains.

“I wanted to kind of go to town with it a bit with the hair and makeup, with the costumes, with the kind of concept of eclipse.”

She has a message for fans and listeners of the new album.

“I hope they get a sense of possibility out of it. A sense of there’s always a way to kind of reboot yourself and pull yourself out of those times where you might feel depleted, like you run out of batteries or feel like, when you get to bigger numbers in your age… there’s still life out there.

“The overall concept is sort of about stepping in and being the main character in your life.

She adds about the listening experience: “I want people to look at it like an old fashioned album that is start to finish.”

“There’s 14 songs. The songs make sense next to each other. So I don’t really want it to be that you just kind of pull out one song and listen to that. I would love people to see it as a kind of story start to finish.”
