Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Donate $1M to LA Wildfire Recovery

Pacific Palisades residents Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have announced their support for the people of Los Angeles as post-wildfire recovery efforts continue.

In a statement on social media, the couple announced they would be donating US$1 million, split amongst five organisations.

“Hey friends, Like so many of us, we see the loss and devastation wrought by the Altadena and Palisades fires,” Tom and Rita posted in a joint Instagram message.

“The challenges to the future of these communities immense. We are so very grateful for the first responders and firefighters from all over, who fought with all they had in order save homes and people. Now we must all move forward to what is next for our city, community and neighbours.”

The Los Angeles Fire Foundation and the American Red Cross are also benefiting.

Tom and Rita, whose Palisades home narrowly missed the wildfires, join a growing list of celebrities supporting relief and recovery efforts – Beyoncé set up a fire relief fund through her nonprofit BeyGOOD, and kicked it off with a $2.5 million donation. Paris Hilton who lost her Malibu home in the fires, donated $100,000 and set up a fund to provide cash handouts and emergency shelter to families in need. According to a now-expired Insta story, Taylor Swift made donations of an undisclosed amount to a number of organisations including Habitat for Humanity. And Metallica donated $500,000 to the California and Pasadena Community Foundations.
