Kurt Russell is revelling in ‘the ranching life’ after quitting Los Angeles for Colorado

Opening up about leaving the city for a quiet rural existence, the actor, 74, revealed the move helped him build the lifestyle he always wanted alongside his 80-year-old longtime actress partner Goldie Hawn.

Speaking about his decision to relocate during an interview with People at the Madison FYC Panel in Los Angeles on Saturday (30.05.26), Kurt said: “What I want to look at, what I want to be a part of – all the things that Colorado has to offer.”

Explaining the appeal of the state, Kurt said the move was motivated by lifestyle rather than any desire to leave Hollywood behind.

He added: “I wanted to eventually get into the ranching life.”

Kurt, whose career has included starring roles in Escape from New York, The Thing, Tombstone, Backdraft and Miracle, said he and Goldie have spent four decades building a ranching life in Colorado after purchasing land in the Old Snowmass area.

The couple – one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting partnerships – raised their family there, including Oliver Hudson, Kate Hudson, Wyatt Russell and Boston Russell.

Reflecting on the early years of his relationship with Goldie, Kurt added: “When Goldie and I got together, a couple of years later, we both built a ranch there together, where our family has grown up. That was 40 years ago.”

The actor added his decision was viewed as unusual at the time, particularly within the entertainment industry, where most stars remained based in Los Angeles.

He said: “I wasn’t escaping. I was just living where I live.”

Kurt continued: “I was fortunate that it really didn’t make any difference. But when I did it, nobody else was doing that. I had many people tell me, ‘Well, that’s goodbye. That’s it’. I said, ‘Well, we’ll see’.”

In recent years, Kurt and Goldie have continued to attract attention as one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples.

Goldie remains beloved to fans thanks to her films including Private Benjamin, Overboard, Death Becomes Her and The First Wives Club – while Kurt’s filmography has spanned more than six decades, from Disney productions in his youth to collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino in The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Discussing his feelings towards Los Angeles, Kurt stressed he has no ill will towards the city.

He said: “I don’t dislike L.A. – it’s just not my preference in terms of how I like to live my life.”

Speaking about Old Snowmass, he added: “You’ve got to understand something about the area of Old Snowmass. Everybody who lives there, they live there because they want to. I can’t say that about L.A..”

Kurt also explained sharing Colorado’s outdoor lifestyle with his children was one of the greatest rewards of the move.

He said: “It’s very different from living in a city.”

Describing the environment in which his children grew up, Kurt said: “They grew up with a good dose of what nature can offer. There are difficulties to it, but there are also great rewards to it. I’m just more comfortable there.”

The actor also drew comparisons with his own upbringing.

He said: “It was like the way I grew up in Maine.”

Kurt added: “I suppose, once you’re exposed to that kind of thing, it’s always home.

“Everything we did there in terms of what we built and what we have in terms of being able to offer in life for our children, I’m really, really happy that we were able to do that.”
