If you have a high school student in competitive sports, then when it comes to Apple TV’s Stick, if you know, you know.
Although set in the world of golf, the Jason Keller created series captures the idiosyncrasies, cynicisms, headaches and ambitions of young athletes no matter how talented they are. Oh, and that nagging coach whose in their head. Owen Wilson plays a former pro golfer, Pryce Cahall, who has seen better days, now working on the fumes of a gambling habit and dealing with a divorce. He takes on a wunderkind in Peter Dager’s Santi, who like Al Pacino in Godfather III, just when he tries to get out, they pull him back in. Of course, blame Dad for any handicaps. If you played competitive football, baseball, volleyball, etc, you’ll live vicariously through Pryce and Santi. Growing up in Texas, Wilson was during his high school days, you got it, a football player.
Stick has already shot season 2 and Keller is in post. No drop date yet. We chat with Keller and Wilson on working with the actor’s fave film directors who helmed episodes in season one, the state of comedy and Wedding Crashers II.
