Memorial Day contains multitudes. Most importantly, the federal holiday honors those who lost their lives while fighting for the United States. It’s also the unofficial kickoff to summer, filled with barbecues, beaches, and swimming.
Memorial Day evolved out of remembrances of Civil War soldiers who lost their lives. Sadly, wars continued (and continue) to be fought, so the original holiday expanded. Since 1971, it has always occurred on the last Monday in May.
This year, Memorial Day is today (Monday, May 25).
With the observance’s many components, it can be confusing to remember what remains open and closed on the actual holiday. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your Monday, whether you have the day off or not.
Is mail delivered on Memorial Day?
Unless a messenger owl from Hogwarts is involved, mail is not delivered on Memorial Day. The United States Postal Service (USPS) is closed. The only exception beyond magic is Priority Mail Express.
Similarly, many UPS locations will be closed, and there will be no pickup or delivery services. The exception is for UPS Express Critical.
FedEx continues the pattern, with no delivery services and modified hours at its physical locations. FedEx Custom Critical operates 365 days a year.
