Supergirl star Milly Alcock shares doomscrolling hack

Milly Alcock has shared the hack she uses to break the cycle of doomscrolling on her phone.

Milly Alcock has opened up about taking social media breaks

The Supergirl star, 25, admits she sometimes struggles to look away from negative social media posts so she’s come up with a helpful trick which encourages her to put down her phone and take her mind off all the bad news – revealing she takes herself off to a cafe where she sits and reads on her own.

In an interview with Variety, she explained: “[It’s hard to put down the phone] because sometimes people reinforce beliefs that you have about yourself, and you’re like: ‘Now someone’s said it! It’s true!’

“And you’ve got to remind yourself that it’s not … Sitting at a café and watching people and reading alone – just being a participant in real life – has been helpful.”

She added: “It’s something I’m trying to get better at. I’m Gen Z! Yeah, I grew up online, so I’m actively trying not to engage – although how could you not?”

Milly previously found herself at the centre of an online furore after she told Vanity Fair magazine about her experiences online after starring in Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon.

She told the publication: “Simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on. We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies.”

In her interview with Variety, Milly commented on the fuss over her comments, saying: “I didn’t even say ‘men’ – I said ‘people!’ And they got so angry. I was like: ‘You’re proving my point. You’re proving my point!’ …

“I guess women know that this is just how it’s always been, unfortunately. And it’s from a lot of people whose profiles have no photo, who are burner accounts. Or someone’s name and then ‘Dad of four, Christian’, which is hilarious to me.

“But I mean, whose opinion do you really care about? If you’re p****** the right kind of people off, you’re doing OK.”

Milly previously told Vanity Fair she was “s***-scared” her life was over after House of the Dragon and Sirens.

The actress – who plays Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl, in the comic book blockbuster – wanted to avoid taking on another big franchise role after playing Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, but she reconsidered after work totally dried up following 2025’s Sirens.

She explained: “I was so s***-scared that my life was over at 22. And, of course, it wasn’t.”

When she had the opportunity to join the DC universe in Supergirl, she didn’t want to let it slip.

She added: “I kind of bullied myself into it … Of course I’m scared. Of course I want people to like me and the movie. But ultimately, it’s out of my control.”
