Showbox has closed deals on “Colony,” Yeon Sang-ho‘s virus-outbreak action thriller, across several territories as the film prepares for its Cannes Film Festival debut in the Midnight Screenings section, out of competition, on May 15.
Buyers span the globe. Gaga Corporation takes Japan, Well Go USA handles North America, StudioCanal acquires the U.K., ARP SAS covers France, Plaion Pictures picks up Germany and Italy, K-Movie Entertainment U.K. takes Australia and New Zealand, BF Distribution covers Latin America, Mis Label handles Scandinavia, Energia takes Spain, and The World Pictures covers the CIS and the Baltics. In Asia, Edko Films Ltd. takes Hong Kong, MovieCloud secures Taiwan, PT Primacinema Multimedia covers Indonesia, Pioneer Films handles the Philippines, Sahamongkolfilm International takes Thailand, Purple Plan Pte Ltd. covers Southeast Asia broadly, and Multivision Multimedia acquires India. Media4Fun covers Poland, Mars handles Turkey, and Izagur Media LLC takes Mongolia.
Yeon – whose previous credits include “Train to Busan,” “Peninsula,” and the series “Hellbound” – directs a cast headlined by Gianna Jun alongside Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rock, and Go Soo. The ensemble will walk the red carpet for the premiere. “Colony” opens in South Korea on May 21.
In the film, biotechnology professor Se-jeong, played by Jun, attends an industry conference that descends into chaos after a rapidly mutating virus is released. With infections spreading and the afflicted transforming, authorities lock down the entire facility, leaving survivors to contend with a mounting threat. “Colony” is presented by Showbox and produced by Wowpoint and Smilegate in association with Midnight Studio.
