Bonnie Tyler hospitalised after emergency surgery in Portugal, aged 74


Singer Bonnie Tyler has been hospitalised after undergoing emergency surgery.

The 74-year-old, known for her song Total Eclipse of the Heart, was admitted to a hospital in Portugal.

“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating,” a statement on her official website, dated May 6, read.

“We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

The Welsh singer rose to fame in the 1970s with hits including Lost in France and It’s a Heartache, eventually becoming the first British female artist to debut at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, and remains the only Welsh artist to land a No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart.

She later gained even more acclaim for Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, which continue to be played to this day.

The hit Total Eclipse of the Heart has become somewhat of a cultural icon, often played during eclipses.

In a 2024 interview, Tyler told Good Morning America about the phenomenon.

“Every time the eclipse comes, everyone all over the world, they play Total Eclipse of the Heart and I never get tired of singing it,” she explained.

Spotify data backs the claim up, with searches on the platform for the Grammy-nominated song increasing by almost 50 per cent in the US, ahead of that month’s eclipse.

Tyler has continued to make music, releasing 18 studio albums across her career. Her latest was in 2022, with the record titled The Best Is Yet to Come.
